Which conductor is enclosed? Where is the closure relative to it? What nearby conductors were present when the reading was checked? A photograph showing that the loop fits does not answer those questions or demonstrate the complete measurement chain’s accuracy. For three-phase systems, see commissioning a three-phase Rogowski measurement chain.

Rogowski coil conductor positioning should be reviewed against the exact model’s instructions and positional evidence. Identify the intended measurement conductor, verify the prescribed closure condition, document its location within the loop and record relevant neighboring conductors. Keep these observations separate from the electronics, configuration and reference measurement used to evaluate the result.

This guide is for retrofit planning and installation-quality records, not for manipulating a coil on an energized busbar. Physical inspection or adjustment requires the site’s authorized electrical-work arrangements and the manufacturer’s instructions. The practical deliverable is a reproducible position record that helps an engineer distinguish a geometry question from a measurement-chain question.

Establish the measurement boundary before evaluating position

Name the current quantity the project intends to measure and identify its conductor on the drawing. A phase or feeder label alone may be ambiguous where a busbar arrangement contains multiple parallel paths. Have the responsible designer define what the coil should enclose, rather than treating whichever section is easiest to reach as an equivalent measurement point.

For this article’s conceptual review, consider one intended busbar inside the closed loop and a separate neighboring conductor outside it. That simple distinction supports a positioning record; it is not a universal instruction for multipath or residual-current measurements. Projects using several conductors within one loop require their own defined measurement purpose and model-specific assessment.

Label the drawing with the coil identity, intended conductor and associated measurement channel. Retain an identifiable view of the surrounding arrangement, not just a close-up of the sensor. If another installer later needs to reproduce the check, they should be able to locate the same conductor without inferring it from cable colors or a cropped photograph.

This is the difference between geometric fit and positioning quality. Window selection asks whether the intended arrangement can be accommodated. Position review asks whether the actual fitted arrangement corresponds to the measurement purpose and the manufacturer’s conditions. A successful fit decision does not automatically close the second task.

Use positional evidence without borrowing another model’s accuracy

PEM’s RCTrms technical notes, sections 3.4 and 3.5, document changes associated with the enclosed conductor’s position and size, as well as interference from currents outside the loop. Its illustrated calibration position is central. These are useful examples of why geometry belongs in the review, not positional-error specifications for every Rogowski coil.

For the RITOKS ZRC flexible coil family, request the selected configuration’s position-dependent evidence and instructions. A central-position accuracy statement does not establish identical performance at the edge, near the closure or across every busbar shape. Do not turn one quoted accuracy figure into an all-position guarantee.

Record the conductor’s location relative to the loop and its closure using a consistent sketch or photograph. Include the conductor geometry that the reviewer considers relevant. This does not mean measuring every dimension indiscriminately; it means retaining enough information to compare the observed installation with the supplier’s actual test conditions.

If the available installation cannot match those conditions, describe the difference and ask the supplier for applicable evidence. The answer may be a documented permissible arrangement, a different configuration or an unresolved measurement requirement. Do not fill the gap with a percentage copied from PEM, an assumed correction factor or a universal separation distance.

Treat closure and orientation as identifiable checks

A loop that appears closed in an overview may not show whether its closure meets the manufacturer’s requirement. Request the exact ZRC closure instructions, including the method of recognizing the required condition and any handling limits. An unrelated probe’s ferrule design cannot establish how a different product should be secured.

PEM’s CWT Ultra-Mini and CWTUM-S instructions describe full insertion of that probe’s free end into its ferrule and specify handling, position and output-direction conditions. The manual restricts applying or removing that probe to de-energized circuits. This is a model-specific example, not a transferable closure mechanism, connector specification or live-work permission for ZRC.

In the review record, keep closure condition separate from orientation. The first asks whether the coil is secured as instructed; the second asks whether its indicated direction corresponds to the project’s channel convention. Neither should be inferred solely from a plausible-looking meter reading. Record the applicable manufacturer marking and the channel convention without inventing an arrow for a product that has not been inspected.

Where the closure cannot be seen in the evidence provided, write “closure not verified.” That is a request for a missing observation, not proof that the coil is defective. Any physical follow-up belongs within the authorized work process. Avoid repeated opening, pulling or repositioning merely to produce a better photograph.

Preserve the neighborhood around the loop

An external conductor does not become irrelevant simply because it is outside the measurement loop. The PEM examples show why neighboring current paths can matter to a measurement assessment. However, their model-specific results do not support a universal error percentage or a distance at which all Rogowski coils become immune to interference.

Record nearby conductors that the reviewer identifies as relevant, their relationship to the loop and the operating configuration represented by the check. A cropped image that omits the adjacent busbars can conceal the very arrangement being evaluated. Retain a broader layout view alongside the closure and position views.

If the cabinet arrangement changes, compare the new neighborhood with the recorded one. Adding another current path or relocating a conductor can create a new review question even when the original coil is untouched. That observation should trigger an engineering assessment, not an automatic assumption that the reading is wrong.

The following original observation map keeps these questions distinct. It is not a manufacturer acceptance table and contains no inferred positional tolerance.

Observation

Aufzubewahrende Unterlagen

Question it addresses

Measurement boundary

Identified intended conductor and channel

Is this the specified quantity and location?

Loop geometry

Relevant conductor shape and position view

Does the arrangement match applicable evidence?

Closure

Model instruction and identifiable closure view

Is the prescribed condition verified?

Orientation

Manufacturer indication and channel convention

Is the intended sign convention documented?

Nearby conductors

Wider layout and reviewed operating configuration

Are external-current questions visible?

Not to scale; no clearance, positional tolerance or actual coil closure mechanism is prescribed.

Keep the coil review separate from the complete measurement chain

The ZRC family is supplied without an integrator. A coil-position review therefore cannot establish the performance of a complete system assembled around it. Retain the selected integrator or receiving equipment, configuration and supplier compatibility evidence in the measurement-chain record. Do not assume an arbitrary instrument input is appropriate.

When a reported reading is unexpected, establish the recorded chain before assigning the discrepancy to positioning. An uncertain channel identity, undocumented configuration or unsuitable reference comparison can make the result difficult to interpret. The geometry record helps the reviewer ask a specific question; it does not prove that geometry is the cause.

The authorized commissioning plan should identify its reference method, operating conditions and acceptance criteria. This article does not specify a test-current injection, energization sequence or accuracy limit. A review should preserve the comparison conditions and the responsible person’s conclusion rather than present a screenshot as independent certification.

A position change also means that an earlier comparison may no longer represent the fitted arrangement. Keep the old record as history, identify what changed and obtain the required review. Avoid combining a new photograph with an old acceptance result without explaining that they describe different configurations.

Fictional arithmetic, not instrument accuracy, measured product performance or a diagnosed installation error.

Interpret a changed position without inventing an error limit

Use a fictional record to separate a repeatable observation from a causal conclusion. Record P0 identifies conductor A inside coil K1, a documented closure view, one neighboring conductor N outside the loop and chain G0 with reference method R0. The stated comparison condition produces a reference reading of one hundred amperes and a chain reading of one hundred amperes. These are invented observations, not ZRC performance results or proof that the chain is accurate at every current, position or operating condition.

A later record P1 shows A nearer the closure. The same nominal comparison condition is reported, with G0 and R0 unchanged in the paperwork, and the readings are now one hundred amperes at the reference and one hundred four amperes at the chain. The indicated difference is four amperes. Relative to that reference value, four divided by one hundred gives four percent. That describes this fictional comparison, not a supplier positional-error specification, a correction coefficient or an uncertainty-qualified accuracy result.

The changed position makes geometry an identifiable review question. It does not prove that position caused all four amperes of difference. Confirm whether the comparison conditions really remained comparable, whether the reference and receiver records support the claimed values, and whether an external conductor’s current changed. A repeated chain identifier establishes identity, not identical behavior or measurement uncertainty. The record should retain those distinctions before naming a defective coil.

Suppose the wider P1 view also reveals that a second external conductor was added after P0. The comparison no longer isolates the position change: both the enclosed conductor’s location and the external-current neighborhood differ. Copying the four-percent number into a “position error” field would misdescribe the evidence. Preserve the measured discrepancy as the observation and keep the cause unresolved. The exact-model positional and external-current evidence may help evaluate the arrangement, but another manufacturer’s percentage cannot supply the missing explanation.

A third record P2 could preserve the original geometry while replacing G0 with a different receiving configuration. An unexpected reading in that record opens a chain-change question even if the loop photo is identical to P0. This reverses the convenient diagnosis that every discrepancy near a busbar must be a positioning problem. It also explains why an apparently unchanged picture cannot stand in for the complete comparison record.

For handover, retain P0 as a historical configuration, identify the changed fields in P1 or P2 and ask for the required scoped disposition. The arithmetic helps name the reported difference; it does not choose an acceptance tolerance or authorize physical repositioning. The practical result is an investigation that starts from visible configuration changes rather than an unsupported all-position guarantee.

Build a reproducible installation record

Create one record per identified coil and channel. Use a stable view reference, document revision and clear disposition so that a later inspection can distinguish the accepted arrangement from an unresolved one. The following ledger is an original handover aid, not a claim of verified ZRC accuracy.

Record field

Entry to retain

Follow-up when incomplete

Coil and channel

Selected variant and channel identifier

Resolve identity before comparing results

Position evidence

Overview, closure view and conductor-location sketch

Obtain the missing observation safely

Applicable conditions

Exact instructions and geometry evidence references

Ask supplier about the actual arrangement

Measurement chain

Receiving equipment and configuration reference

Resolve compatibility or setup evidence

Comparison

Authorized method, conditions and recorded finding

Do not infer acceptance from appearance

Change boundary

Layout or configuration changes requiring review

Reassess the affected entry

For example, the conductor and channel are identified, but the photograph hides the closure behind a support. Mark only that observation unresolved; do not reject the complete measurement system on appearance alone. In another case, the closure is documented but a neighboring conductor has been added after commissioning. Preserve the earlier finding and open a layout-change review rather than silently reuse it.

Finish by asking the supplier for exact-model closure instructions, positional test conditions and relevant external-conductor evidence for the proposed arrangement. Ask the project reviewer to identify what has been accepted and what still needs investigation. The aim is a traceable position assessment, not a generic declaration that every coil works equally well wherever it fits.

Literaturverzeichnis

<ul
