State whether the circuit has a neutral, which outgoing conductors supply the load, and which return paths belong to that same circuit. Show protective conductors separately. The engineer reviewing the earthing arrangement must resolve any combined conductor or downstream connection that makes those identities unclear; do not classify a conductor by insulation colour alone.

Bender’s measuring current transformer selection guide, published in May 2026, says to follow the individual product instructions. Its installation section routes current-carrying conductors together through the sensor and excludes the protective conductor. Use that as a review principle, while checking the selected manufacturer’s diagram for the actual circuit.

Drawing item

Information to record

Review question

Monitored feeder

Source, load and feeder identifier

Does the drawing define one complete monitored circuit?

Live conductors

Each phase and the neutral where applicable

Are the intended outgoing and return conductors identified?

Protective path

PE route and connection references

Is protective wiring distinguishable from the monitored live bundle?

Branches and returns

Junctions, shared points and alternative paths

Does any relevant circuit path leave the defined boundary?

Sensor location

Position relative to terminals and branches

Can the physical layout implement the approved circuit drawing?

Do not begin by assuming that every conductor in a multicore cable must enter the window. Equally, do not omit a neutral merely because a three-phase label appears on the feeder schedule. The circuit design and manufacturer instructions determine the relevant live conductors. Ask for a revised drawing when the proposed arrangement cannot be traced from source to load and back.

This boundary review is different from fitting an ordinary metering CT to an individual phase. A load-current measurement arrangement does not establish the correct residual-current arrangement. Substituting a familiar phase-CT sketch can obscure the very return path that the reviewer needs to check.

Identify the circuit boundaries before reviewing the matched sensor instructions. This is not a wiring diagram.

Review the live bundle and protective path together

Create two linked views: a circuit view showing conductor identities, and a physical view showing how those conductors pass through the sensor. The first explains what is monitored. The second reveals whether a terminal position, cable gland or bend makes the intended route impractical. Neither view should replace the other.

For a three-phase circuit with a neutral, identify the neutral on both views rather than relying on a note reading “all cables.” For a circuit without a neutral, record that condition explicitly. For PE, show the separate path around the sensor and its approved termination. Do not move a protective connection merely to simplify the illustration.

Bender’s WS series page provides a bounded manufacturer example: its residual-current CT arrangement includes the live conductors and excludes PE. The page also specifies a conductor shielding restriction for that series. That restriction should not be copied into a universal instruction for every RITOKS sensor; shielding arrangements require the selected model’s own documentation.

Review finding

Why it needs attention

Required resolution

Neutral identity is missing

The monitored return path cannot be checked

Revise the circuit and routing views

PE appears inside the sensing window

The drawing conflicts with the cited residual-sensor arrangement

Have the designer correct or explain the exact approved configuration

A branch is shown only after the layout is drawn

Its relationship to the monitored feeder is unclear

Reconcile the single-line and physical drawings

Sensor is labelled only “CT”

Ordinary measurement and residual sensing may be confused

Specify its function and exact matched monitor

Manufacturer sketch belongs to another sensor

Installation assumptions may not transfer

Obtain the manual for the ordered combination

These are review triggers, not remote instructions to alter an energised board. A window dimension alone does not demonstrate an acceptable installation. Include the insulation envelope, conductor arrangement, entry angle, mechanical support and space needed to follow the specified bending requirements.

The Bender selection guide discusses conductor centring, routing geometry, bend clearance and nearby magnetic fields. Those points explain why a bundle that physically fits can still need a layout review. Its particular dimensional recommendations belong to that guide and the relevant sensor instructions; this article does not prescribe a universal window ratio or a clearance value.

Request a dimensioned layout when the routing turns immediately at a terminal or when large conductors make the proposed sensor position difficult to reproduce. The engineer should compare that layout with both the sensor instructions and the cable manufacturer’s bending requirements. Enlarging the window may resolve a mechanical constraint, but it does not establish electrical compatibility with the monitor.

For a split-core candidate, ask how the selected sensor is mounted and how its closure is inspected according to its manual. For a closed-core candidate, confirm the assembly sequence before buying parts. These are different production questions. Neither construction should be described as universally preferable without knowing the installation and the matched sensor options.

Keep the sensor–monitor pair identifiable

Residual sensing requires more than a ring that fits the cables. The order schedule should identify the monitor, the compatible external sensor, its connection arrangement and the required measurement characteristics. Keep the manufacturer pairing evidence attached to the exact order code rather than to a broad product-family brochure.

Опубликованные RITOKS residual current monitoring device with external CTs is described as a monitoring and alarm device using matched differential-current transformers. The page distinguishes that function from protective automatic disconnection. Its supplier-listed sensor references are candidates to confirm, not permission to substitute any ordinary CT with a similar window.

For quotation, provide the circuit drawing and conductor layout alongside the requested sensor construction. Ask the supplier to confirm the ordered monitor–sensor combination and supply its model-specific instructions. If the project requires detection of particular current components or operation with power-electronic loads, put that requirement in the request rather than inferring it from “residual current” in the title.

A purchasing comparison should therefore have separate columns for physical fit, sensor compatibility and monitoring function. A favourable answer in one column must not erase an unanswered question in another. This separation is particularly valuable when different suppliers propose different sensing architectures under similar commercial descriptions.

A drawing-review example without a pretend test result

Consider a hypothetical panel revision in which a designer replaces a closed-core sensor with a split-core candidate to simplify assembly. The feeder drawing identifies three phases and a neutral, but the new physical layout shows only the phases passing through the window. The bill of materials also retains a generic CT description.

The correct next action is not to choose an alarm setting or declare the replacement suitable. Mark the disagreement between drawings, confirm the intended monitored boundary, and request the exact sensor pairing evidence. The split-core construction addresses an assembly preference; it does not answer which circuit conductors must be included or whether the existing evaluator supports the sensor.

After the designer resolves the routing, the mechanical reviewer checks the bundle envelope and mounting details against the proposed model’s instructions. Procurement then updates the order description so the approved sensor is identifiable. This example is an original review scenario, not a reported RITOKS installation, commissioning measurement or compatibility approval.

Plan the acceptance record before assembly

The acceptance record should connect the approved drawing to the installed configuration. Record the sensor and monitor identifiers, relevant manual revisions, feeder identity and any approved routing change. A photograph may support the record, but it cannot reveal every conductor identity or hidden return connection on its own.

Ask the commissioning engineer to define the functional checks from the actual monitor instructions and project design. Distinguish a local monitor test, a sensor-path check and an alarm communication check in the record. Do not assume one test proves every part of the measurement and response chain.

If the device reports an alarm to another system, document who receives it and what operational action is intended. A correctly displayed alarm is not evidence that protective disconnection is provided. The project must separately identify any required protective device and its design basis.

When an unexpected indication occurs, retain the load condition and circuit state with the observation. That helps the responsible engineer compare the installed route, sensor selection and monitoring requirements. Changing an alarm threshold before establishing those facts can conceal an unresolved installation question rather than answer it.

What to send with the RFQ

Send one coordinated information set: feeder diagram, earthing-system reference, identified live and protective conductors, physical routing view, bundle dimensions, monitor identity, proposed sensor identity and installation constraints. Include whether the requirement is monitoring and alarm or a separately engineered protection function.

Ask RITOKS to confirm the matched external sensor, exact orderable configuration and documentation for the intended arrangement. Use the product page as the commercial starting point, then require model-specific evidence for acceptance. The practical result of a good routing review is a traceable circuit and a procurable measurement pair—not a generic ring symbol with an assumed function.

Список литературы

Bender.
