SCR Module Configurations: Dual SCR and SCR-Diode Topology Questions
SCR module configurations can place two thyristors, a thyristor and diode, or another documented arrangement inside a similar industrial package. The external housing is not enough to identify the current path. Buyers must verify the exact internal circuit, terminal map, gate connections and intended converter topology before comparing ratings.

This comparison explains how to verify SCR module topology. It does not provide a firing circuit, wiring diagram or converter design, and it does not claim that MTA and MTC families use a particular internal connection unless the exact order-code document confirms it.
Decision Inputs at a Glance
| Decision input | Buyer must confirm | Evidence required |
|---|---|---|
| Converter function | AC control, controlled rectification or another topology | Approved system diagram |
| Internal configuration | Dual SCR, SCR-diode or other arrangement | Exact internal circuit symbol |
| Terminals | Power, gate and cathode references | Exact terminal drawing |
| Electrical stress | Voltage, current waveform and commutation conditions | Application calculation plus datasheet |
| Thermal integration | Loss, baseplate, interface and cooling | Exact loss and mounting evidence |

Begin With the Converter Topology
Draw the required power circuit at a functional level before choosing a module. Identify which positions need controllable thyristors and which can use diodes, the direction of current in each operating interval, and how current commutates.
A dual-SCR module and an SCR-diode module can support different circuit building blocks. Neither is universally more capable. The correct choice is the configuration that implements the approved topology with the required controllability and terminal arrangement.
Read the Internal Circuit Symbol
Obtain the exact datasheet circuit symbol for the full order code. Confirm anode, cathode, common terminal and the relationship between the two semiconductor elements. Similar package names or family abbreviations are not a substitute for this check.
Treat the symbol as a component boundary, not as the complete application circuit. External snubbers, protection, firing circuits, isolation and commutation components remain part of the wider design unless the exact product documentation says otherwise.
Verify Gate and Auxiliary Connections
Each thyristor requires the correct gate reference and triggering conditions. Identify gate and auxiliary cathode terminals from the exact drawing and preserve their numbering in the design record. An SCR-diode configuration may present only one controlled element, while a dual-SCR arrangement has separate control needs.
This article does not specify gate current, pulse shape or driver isolation. Those values must come from the selected device data and the driver design. Never infer gate connections from connector location alone.
Compare Ratings Only After Topology Matches
Once the internal arrangement is correct, compare repetitive voltage, current definitions, surge conditions, switching or commutation data and thermal characteristics. Ensure that compared values use the same definitions and reference conditions.
A higher headline current does not repair a wrong topology. Likewise, combining a current rating from one variant with the circuit diagram of another creates a configuration that may not exist. Keep every accepted value tied to one exact order code.
Build the Loss and Cooling Model
Calculate conduction and switching-related loss using the actual device current waveform and the manufacturer method. A dual-SCR and SCR-diode circuit may place different semiconductor types in the current path during different intervals, so loss cannot be copied mechanically between them.
Carry the calculated loss through the documented thermal path, interface and heatsink. Verify mounting surface, pressure, orientation, airflow and ambient conditions. The cooling system is part of the application evidence, not an optional accessory decision.
Control Substitutions and Drawing Revisions
When a supplier proposes a different series or configuration, repeat the topology and terminal review first. Do not let a matching footprint or similar current range bypass the circuit check.
Record the datasheet revision, internal diagram, terminal drawing and application schematic used for approval. If any of those changes, reopen the affected review before releasing production or service replacements.
Build an Exact-Model Evidence File
Build the SCR-module approval record around the required circuit configuration and the exact order code. Compare the terminal diagram, mounting drawing and rating definitions in that model's documentation with the project requirement. Retain the original datasheet revision and identify any conditions that still need engineering confirmation. Do not transfer terminal arrangements or ratings from a similar-looking module or a general family listing.
Check that every accepted statement describes the same orderable item. Similar housings can contain different circuits, supplies, terminals, accessories or protection functions. Do not combine a family maximum from one variant, a diagram from another and an optional feature from a third. Mark unresolved fields explicitly so they remain visible in the commercial review.
Keep Project Inputs Separate From Product Evidence
The project team defines the application: source, load, duty, environment, controls, mechanical limits and required functions. The supplier identifies an exact SCR Module and supports it with exact documents. Neither side should fill a gap by inference from appearance, a shared family name or one matching headline value.
Freeze the application record while quotations are being compared. If the load, voltage, duty, environment, cooling method, enclosure or required output changes, issue a revised record and ask each supplier to reconfirm the candidate. Otherwise apparently comparable quotations may be answering different technical requirements.
Common Procurement Errors
- Selecting SCR Module from one headline rating while the application context remains incomplete.
- Using a circuit, curve, terminal drawing or performance claim from a neighboring model.
- Treating a family page or product photograph as exact technical evidence.
- Assuming an accessory, system function or coordination result is included without documentation.
- Approving a substitute without repeating the topology, rating, mounting and evidence review.
Resolve these gaps before comparing price and lead time. The reviewer should be able to trace every accepted statement either to the project requirement or to the exact candidate document. A proposal may remain commercially interesting while technically incomplete, but missing evidence must not disappear inside the quotation.
How to Compare Supplier Offers
| Comparison point | Required evidence | Do not accept |
|---|---|---|
| Question | Dual-SCR configuration | SCR-diode configuration |
| Controlled elements | Two thyristors, subject to exact diagram | One thyristor plus one diode, subject to exact diagram |
| Gate review | Two controlled-element connections may be present | Controlled-element gate plus diode path |
| Circuit role | Depends on converter arrangement | Depends on converter arrangement |
| Loss model | Uses current through each thyristor interval | Uses separate SCR and diode characteristics |
| Verification | Exact circuit and terminal drawing required | Exact circuit and terminal drawing required |

Normalize every SCR Module offer to the same application record. Keep document revisions, test conditions, included accessories and open questions beside each value. This makes differences in delivered scope visible and prevents a lower-cost but narrower offer from appearing equivalent to a complete solution.
Decision Workflow
- Freeze the functional converter schematic.
- Identify the semiconductor role in each current interval.
- Match the required role to an exact internal module diagram.
- Verify all power, gate and auxiliary terminal numbers.
- Compare electrical stress under common definitions.
- Calculate loss and the complete thermal path.
- Freeze the exact order code and document revision.
At each step, stop when a critical application input is unknown, the quoted model is ambiguous, a required claim is supported only by another manufacturer or another order code, or the installation falls outside the available evidence. These are engineering gaps, not editorial details.
RFQ Preparation Checklist
A useful RFQ for scr module configurations is concise enough to answer and complete enough to prevent silent assumptions. Identify unknown values as questions and require a full orderable code rather than a generic family recommendation.
- Application and functional converter topology
- Required dual-SCR, SCR-diode or other internal arrangement
- AC/DC system voltage and current waveform
- Commutation and operating-frequency context
- Required repetitive and surge evidence
- Gate-driver interface questions
- Terminal orientation and mechanical drawing
- Cooling, mounting, quantity and destination
Request the current datasheet revision and the exact scope of any certification, compatibility, coordination or performance claim. Record quantity and destination after the technical inputs so commercial terms do not obscure unresolved engineering questions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I identify SCR module topology from the housing?
No. Use the exact internal circuit and terminal drawing.
Is a dual-SCR module always interchangeable with an SCR-diode module?
No. Their controlled elements and current paths differ.
Can ratings be compared before checking the configuration?
No. A rating comparison is meaningful only after topology and definitions match.
